Liver Biopsy

A liver biopsy is a procedure to remove a small piece of liver tissue, so it can be examined under a microscope for signs of damage or disease. Your doctor may recommend a liver biopsy if blood tests or imaging studies suggest you might have a liver problem.

Does a liver biopsy hurt?
Because of the local anaesthetic, you should not feel any pain. However, you may feel some mild discomfort or pressure as the doctor pushes on the needle. Any pain or discomfort you experience is usually eased with painkillers.

A liver biopsy is a test used to diagnose liver conditions. Tissue samples are removed from your liver and checked under a microscope for signs of damage or disease. A liver biopsy can tell if there are cancer cells or other abnormal cells in your liver. It can also tell how well your liver is working.
