Dyspepsia, also known as indigestion, refers to discomfort or pain that occurs in the upper abdomen, often after eating or drinking. It is not a disease but a symptom. Dyspepsia is a common problem, affecting up to 30% of the population. Common symptoms include bloating, discomfort, feeling too full, nausea, and gas.
Signs and symptoms of functional dyspepsia may include:
Pain or burning in the stomach, bloating, excessive belching, or nausea after meals.
An early feeling of fullness (satiety) when eating.
Pain in the stomach that may sometimes occur unrelated to meals or may be relieved with meals.
Indigestion is a chronic disease that usually lasts years, if not a lifetime. It does, however, display periodicity, which means that the symptoms may be more frequent or severe for days, weeks, or months and then less frequent or severe for days, weeks, or months.
