It is a non-invasive, ultrasound-based test that measures liver stiffness in minutes, in an outpatient setting, without needles or sedation and for the majority of patients, it now removes the need for a biopsy altogether.
FibroScan reports two separate measurements: liver stiffness, measured in kilopascals (kPa), which correlates with the degree of fibrosis, and the Controlled Attenuation Parameter (CAP), which estimates the amount of fat in the liver. Together, these give a detailed, immediate picture of two of the most important aspects of liver health.

- Simple preparation Patients are generally asked to fast for a few hours beforehand, as eating can affect the accuracy of the reading.
- A short, painless procedure The test typically takes around ten minutes, with a probe placed against the skin over the right side of the chest.
- No sedation or recovery time Patients can resume normal activities immediately afterward.
- Awareness of limitations Factors such as significant obesity, fluid in the abdomen (ascites), or very narrow rib spaces can affect accuracy, and are taken into account when interpreting results.
